Maddie's 4 Must Have Beach Reads

Adrift: 76 Days Lost at Sea by Steve Callahan

Not to be confused with the movie Adrift, this book follows Steve Callahan in his incredible journey of being lost at sea while completely alone.  This book is inspiring, but also interesting for anyone interested in engineering.  Steve was capable and innovative while stranded and did the best with what he had.  He outlines his on-the-go inventions in the book and analyzes how they helped keep him alive.

Barbarian Days: A Surfing Life by William Finnegan

Barbarian Days is one of those books I've bought over ten times.  Either as a gift for friends or because I got my copy soaked by salt water while reading it at the beach (this has happened multiple times...oops).  If you have an interest in surfing, adventure, or even just beautiful story telling this book is for you.  This is a memoir that follows Finnegan through his travels in the pursuit of the next adventure.

Swell: Sailing the Pacific in Search of Surf and Self by Captain Liz Clark

When I was little my dad would tell me about Liz Clark and her travels on her sailboat.  I thought she was the coolest girl ever.  Fast forward 15 years later and I was moving to Hawai'i.  When I got to my new house this book was waiting for me with a message from my dad that said "To my 'big girl' on her big adventure".  Needless to say, this book has sentimental value to me.  But even without it, this book is phenomenal.  A story of adventure, passion, and one woman's journey on the ocean.  Liz is inspiring, relatable, and reminds you how important it is to love your life.

The Island of Sea Women by Lisa See

I truly mean it when I say I would not be content if I went through life without having read this book.  The author does such an amazing job of describing the characters and the locations she writes about, it truly felt like I was there.  This novel is about the women of Jeju in Korea who live their lives entwined with each other and the sea.  While the book is fiction, it is based off of real women.  This book moved me in ways not many books do, and I hope it does the same for you.

Alright, if you need us we will be adding all 4 of these books to our beach tote the next time we are beach bound!
